How to Choose Flowering Shrubs

Layer by height. Professional planting beds step down from tall to short. Use low shrubs under 3 feet, such as Dwarf Ixora, Drift Rose, Dwarf Allamanda and Foxtail Fern, along walkways and bed edges. Fill the middle with 3 to 6 foot shrubs like Plumbago, Ixora ‘Maui’, Thryallis and Hibiscus ‘Fiesta’. Save larger shrubs like Nora Grant Ixora, Hibiscus, Panama Rose and Starburst Clerodendrum for the back of the bed, corners and screening.

Read your light before you buy. Most flowering shrubs need full sun to bloom heavily. For shadier spots under trees or on the north side of the house, look at Golden and Red Shrimp Plants and Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, which prefer some shade.

Coastal yards need salt-tolerant shrubs. Bougainvillea, Texas Sage, Oleander and Bottlebrush ‘Little John’ are rated high for salt tolerance. Shrubs rated low, such as the shrimp plants and Angel’s Trumpet, belong in sheltered courtyards and inland gardens.

Plant for pollinators. Firebush and Porterweed are among the best butterfly plants in Florida, and Red Shrimp Plant and Panama Rose are hummingbird favorites. Planting several together creates a true pollinator garden.

Caring for Flowering Shrubs in Southwest Florida

Light, regular pruning after each bloom flush keeps shrubs dense and flowering. Avoid shearing flowering shrubs into tight boxes, which removes the tips where most of them bloom. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring and early fall, and follow Manatee and Sarasota counties’ summer restrictions on nitrogen and phosphorus. Ixoras and Gardenias prefer slightly acidic conditions and can yellow in alkaline soil or near concrete, so good placement and the right fertilizer make a real difference.
