Evergreen Trees for Florida Landscapes
Year-round shade, privacy and structure for Southwest Florida yards
Evergreen trees are the backbone of a Florida landscape. While palms add drama and flowering trees add color, evergreens deliver the things you notice every single day: shade over the driveway, a living privacy screen along the property line, shelter for birds and a sense of permanence that makes a new home feel established.
The evergreen trees in this guide hold their leaves all year and are proven performers in Manatee, Sarasota, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. They range from compact accent trees that fit beside a front walk to grand Live Oaks and Southern Magnolias that will shade your home for generations. Compare them below, then click through for a full profile of each tree.

How to Choose an Evergreen Tree
For shade: Nothing beats an oak. A Live Oak’s broad canopy can cool a home and yard for a century, but it needs space. Plant large shade trees well away from foundations, septic systems, sidewalks and driveways, and keep them out from under power lines.
For privacy: Japanese Blueberry and Holly form dense, upright screens that block views from neighbors and roads. Sea Grape makes an excellent fast, salt-proof screen on coastal properties.
For small spaces: A Ligustrum Tree trained as a multi-trunk standard gives you a tidy evergreen accent in a front bed or courtyard, and it can be pruned to almost any height.
For a statement: A Southern Magnolia, with its glossy leaves and huge fragrant white flowers, is a classic Southern specimen tree. It does best on mainland properties where it is protected from direct salt spray.
Planting Evergreen Trees in Southwest Florida
Plant trees so the root flare, where the trunk widens at the base, sits at or slightly above the soil line. Trees planted too deep are a leading cause of slow decline. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk, and water new trees frequently for the first several months while roots grow into the surrounding soil. Larger trees take longer to establish, so expect to water a big oak or magnolia through its first full year.
Evergreen Tree FAQs
What is the best shade tree for a Florida yard?
Live Oak is the classic choice: long-lived, native, salt tolerant and known for standing up well to strong winds. Just be sure you have room for a canopy that can eventually spread much wider than the tree is tall.
What evergreen tree makes the best privacy screen in Florida?
Japanese Blueberry is a popular choice for a tall, tidy screen. Holly works well too and adds berries for birds. On the coast, Sea Grape is the most salt-tolerant screening option.
Can Sea Grape grow inland in Manatee County?
Sea Grape grows well on mainland properties but is somewhat cold sensitive, so it performs best near the coast and in the warmer southern parts of our region.
Do evergreen trees in Florida drop leaves?
Yes, but gradually. Evergreens replace old leaves throughout the year instead of all at once. Live Oaks often shed a flush of old leaves in late winter or spring as new growth comes in.
